Andean Araucanía

Known by its magnificent heights, the Andean area covers a wide variety of national parks, nature reserves, volcanoes, waterside recreational areas, lakes, rivers and hot spring centers, offering high intensity sport activities as well as relaxing alternatives for leisure.

How to get there

Car

From Santiago to Temuco driving through Ruta 5 Sur it is 676 km (420 miles). To get to Curacautín and Lonquimay from Santiago you must go through the city of Victoria, from there to Curacautín there are 56 km (35 miles) and to Lonquimay, 119 km (74 miles) by paved road.
To get to Melipeuco from Temuco towards east, it is 92 km (57 miles) by paved road.
In regular conditions, getting from Santiago to these locations takes around 10 to 11 hours.
There is daily transport leaving from Santiago to these communes taking approximately 10 to 11 hours.

Most buses travel overnight. Buses depart from:
• Terminal Alameda: 3570 Bernardo O’Higgins Ave., Universidad de Santiago subway station. Phone number: 562 27762424.
• Terminal Santiago (previously called “terminal Sur”): on the corner of Alameda and Nicasio Retamales, 150 m (93 miles) west from Terminal Alameda. Phone number: 562 23761750.
• Terminal San Borja (previously called “terminal Norte”): on the corner of San Borja and Alameda, nearby Estación Central train station. Phone number: 562 27760645.

From Temuco to Victoria, Curacautín. Lonquimay, Cunco y Melipeuco from the Rural Buses terminal, located at 032 Pinto Ave.

Temptations on the Way

En el destino andino lacustre hay varios lugares interesantes para detenerse o tomar un desvío. Si desea realizar trekking en los Parques Nacionales se debe llevar alimentación y abundante agua. En el caso de mal tiempo, una brújula y un mapa son de mucha utilidad para mantenerse en la ruta. Es importante llevar lentes de sol para proteger la vista, sobre todo en sectores con nieve.

Schedule

En las ciudades principales de este destino, el comercio abre de 10:00 a 19:00 hrs en invierno y en verano hasta las 20:00 hrs. Algunos establecimientos cierran al mediodía, pero en general se pueden encontrar supermercados y almacenes abiertos
